First Constructed Phase of Newtown Pike Opens
The first constructed phase of the long anticipated Newtown Pike extension project officially opened to traffic September 8, 2010 in Lexington, Ky. A ribbon cutting ceremony followed and was attended by Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear, First Lady Jane Beshear, Congressman Ben Chandler, Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry and other state and local officials and dignitaries.

This new portion of roadway, referred to as Phase IV, took about a year to construct. The roadway was recently renamed Oliver Lewis Way as a result of community voting to honor the African American jockey from Lexington who won the first Kentucky Derby in 1875.

The next construction phase includes a noise barrier wall along the Norfolk Southern Railroad Yard adjacent to the proposed redevelopment area along DeRoode Street (Phase I). The noise wall construction letting is scheduled for 2011. This section will tie Oliver Lewis Way to the South Broadway intersection with Bolivar Street.

Plans for the Newtown Pike Extension have been in the works for more than 50 years. Upon completion Newtown Pike will extend from the interstate on Lexington’s north side all the way to the University of Kentucky campus.

Welcome to the Newtown Pike Extension Website

The proposed Newtown Pike Extension Project extends as a four lane boulevard with a grass median from Main Street in a southerly direction to Patterson Street. At Patterson Street the project becomes a two lane street to Broadway. Also at Patterson Street , a two lane connector proceeds to and over Broadway and aligns with the existing Scott Street ending near the University of Kentucky’s main campus entrance. In June 2000, a report was issued concerning the purpose and need for extending Newtown Pike.
